NetworkMiner can provide you with a huge amount of forensic information, gathered from other machines on your local network. It can tell you where packets are being send and where they are coming from and much more. The software is capable of detecting host names and addresses, installed operating systems, open ports and other details. The best part is that it gathers this information passively, without making its own traffic on the network.

Although designed for Windows, the software also works on Mac OS X, Linux and FreeBSD. Its core files can be extracted directly from a ZIP archive, so there is no need to go through an Installation process. What's more, the software doesn't write anything in the Windows Registry, so you can use it as portable tool on a USB drive.

The first thing you will notice is the fact that NetworkMiner lets you choose what network adapter to use. You can select one in a drop-down menu, after which you only need to click a Start button, to being monitoring the network. The gathered information is displayed instantly on the user interface. Once a packet is sent or received, the application will immediately log this event and it will add the appropriate information on its interface.

As previously mentioned, NetworkMiner is designed to gather a huge amount of information. The best part is that everything is neatly categorized on a series of tabs. You can view information about hosts, frames, captured files and images, messages, credentials, sessions, DNS details and more.

Unlike other network sniffers, NetworkMiner is not focused on the packet traffic. Instead it is focused on the hosts that send and receive those packets. In other words, instead of looking at a long list of packets and trying to figure out their corresponding machines, you can look all hosts in a tree structure and see what packets they have sent and received, along with many other details.

Anything that is sent and receive over your network will be picked up by NetworkMiner, along with many other useful pieces of information.

Pros

The software is capable of retrieving a vast amount of information. The captured details are very well organized. Rather than focusing on packet traffic, the software is focused on hosts.

Cons

There are no obvious drawbacks to point out.
